Data on same-sex marriages and civil unions in the U.S.

The Williams Institute has published the data chart below. Note the dramatic jump in the number of marriages in 2008, reflecting the period during that year when same-sex marriage was legal in California.

    Is this a chart of same-sex marriages and unions *performed* in the U.S.? Or does it count the many (American) people married in Canada, etc.? (Counting civil unions from foreign countries would seem difficult, but counting marriages might be do-able and worthwhile, since they receive recognition here in certain states)

    This chart contains data only for marriages performed in the U.S.
